Legend has it that the tradition of adorning the forehead of elephants during ceremonial occasions originated with Lord Brahma, who crafted the first ornamental caparison/nettipattam. The honored recipient was Airavatha, Lord Indra’s magnificent white elephant, making it the inaugural wearer of such regal attire.
Throughout history, as elephants took to the battlefield, the necessity arose to shield them from the enemy's spears. These protective coverings evolved over time, gradually becoming more elaborate and ornate. They transformed into the exquisite ornaments known today as nettipattam, symbolizing both the grandeur of ceremonial occasions and the valor of war elephants.
