The Makaravilakku festival at the Sabarimala temple in Kerala is an annual event that holds immense religious and cultural significance. Devotees from various parts of India and even from abroad embark on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala during this time to participate in the festivities.
One of the highlights of the Makaravilakku festival is the appearance of the divine light known as Makara Jyothi. This celestial phenomenon is believed to occur on the evening of Makara Sankranti and is viewed from Ponnambalamedu, a hill situated opposite the Sabarimala temple. The Makara Jyothi is considered a manifestation of Lord Ayyappa's presence, and devotees gather in large numbers to witness this auspicious event.
The pilgrimage to Sabarimala is unique in its observances and rituals. Devotees follow a strict 41-day penance known as "vratham" before undertaking the pilgrimage. This period involves observing celibacy, practicing austerity, and maintaining a vegetarian diet. Pilgrims wear traditional attire, including black dhotis, and carry the irumudi, a two-compartment bag containing offerings for Lord Ayyappa.
The culmination of the pilgrimage is marked by the ascent to the Sabarimala temple, located in the Western Ghats. The temple is situated on a hill, and pilgrims climb a series of 18 sacred steps, known as "Pathinettam Padi," to reach the sanctum sanctorum. The temple attracts millions of devotees during the Makaravilakku season, making it one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world.
